The Habermas Cafe

Our new feature: a slice of our Ginger site dedicated to one of the most interesting modern philosphers, Jürgen Habermas. I found him some 21 years ago while sitting in the library of the German Cultural Center in Atlanta (yeah, there really IS one!) and dove from there into some of the most challenging mental/philosophical spaces of inquiry I have ever embraced.

My fave quote, so far: "Critical reason gains power analytically over dogmatic inhibition".

While in the past much of the work of Habermas was spread far and wide online, I've recently found one site that really serves the purpose of not only an introduction but also in depth. It's Habermas Online .

The GingerWriter

Ginger Trivia:

The English botanist William Roscoe (1753-1831) gave the plant the name Zingiber officinale in an 1807 publication. The ginger family is a tropical group especially abundant in Indo-Malaysia, consisting of more 1200 plant species in 53 genera. The genus Zingiber includes about 85 species of aromatic herbs from East Asia and tropical Australia. The name of the genus, Zingiber, derives from a Sanskrit word denoting "horn-shaped," in reference to the protrusions on the rhizome..source

Our ultimate mission at Ginger Central is to reduce human suffering. Please take a moment to visit our featured humanitarian cause and consider donating to help make the world a better place to live.

Oxfam has traditionally worked in partnership with rural communities throughout Darfur, providing capacity building and technical know-how to help improve water supplies, sanitation and agriculture in what has always been one of the poorest and most isolated parts of Sudan. Oxfam is helping over 700,000 people in Darfur and Chad.

In addition to writing about Ginger, I'm also the Social Justice chairperson at a small Unitarian Universalist congregation in north Georgia. So if you'd like to read about humanitarian issues, please go to our frequently updated page for social concerns at www.mluuc.org/takeaction.html .
